A day of two seasons on the U14 tour to Lugano

A day of two seasons on the U14 tour to Lugano

Winterthur Rugby Academy26 May - 11:21

U14s battle hard in the 'tropical' climate of Lugano

A trip down to sunny Ticino saw two battling performances from our U14s at the weekend. The results may not have gone our way on this occasion, but the players dug in and showed tremendous spirit.

We set off in the rain from Winterthur only to emerge into a tropical climate on the other side of the Gotthard rail tunnel. Lugano are using a borrowed pitch while their original ground undergoes renovations.

The first match against Zug was evenly poised before our opponents finished more strongly to end up winners by 7 tries to 5. It’s not often a team scores five tries and ends up on the losing side, but we were an attacking threat throughout.

With our ranks depleted by a couple of niggles, our second game against Lugano was a backs-to-the-wall affair. The home side took full advantage of their larger squad and familiarity with the muggy climate.

But we dug deep to put in a stronger second half performance than in the first period. That second half ended honours even at two tries apiece, but we still succumbed 7-3 over the full match.

Many thanks to our generous hosts Lugano and we look forward to seeing their revamped home ground in the coming years. Back on our side of the Alps, the rain was still coming down when we returned!
